Restaurant Name: Dis & Dem (previously located in the back of the Rue St. louis bar) Neighborhood: French Quarter Ambiance: French Quarter Funky Name of the Burger Ordered: Dis & Dem Burger Price of the Burger(s): $11 + $3.50 for fries Size of the Burger: 8 oz Temperature: N/A * We visited this place several months ago and it appears that it has now permanently closed (AGAIN). However, it has risen from the dead before, so we wanted to put up the rating anyways in hopes that it pops up again at some point. Below you'll find our original review (before we knew it had closed -- a point I'm making because we basically saw this coming).
I'll start by saying, we had to try REALLY hard to get our mouths on this burger. Our first attempt was thwarted when we showed up at its old spot on Banks St. only to find out that it had stopped serving dinner. Then, when trying to reschedule a month or so later we saw that the Banks St. located was PERMANENTLY closed. What?! We were baffled and disappointed. But Burger Meet NOLA doesn't give up that easily. We kept our eye out for any news about this place that we had heard so much about, and sure enough we finally found an article online that said Dis & Dem was going to open in the back of Rue St. Louis Bar (now called Bar Mon Cher). So we headed into the French Quarter after work one day, and finally got to experience Dis & Dem for ourselves. Overall, we weren't thrilled, but we weren't disappointed. You know the feeling? One of those pretty average burgers that you won't be raving to your friends about, but that you also didn't mind spending the calories on. We are a little concerned that its location isn't the best (if we didn't KNOW it was there, we would have never found it just wandering around the FQ). So our advice would be, check it out while it's still around, because we're not sure it will be much longer. Dis & Dem Burger: 6.45 Bun: 5.2 Wasn't soft enough for our liking and didn't have that good "squish" factor. Not sure if we got some day-old bread, or if that's just how they roll (no pun intended, ha!). Gets a teeny, tiny nod for being an onion bun (we like variety!). Patty: 6.7 The Dis & Dem Burger packs a unique punch. It's a regular beef patty, with a hot sausage patty on top (from Bogalusa). The sausage had a nice lil' spice to it. Strangely, the beef patty looked and tasted a little like a meatball. Absolutely NO offense to meatballs, but we just weren't expecting it. Overall it was an interesting combo and we give them points for creativity. Bun to Meat Ratio: 5.8 WAY. TOO. MUCH. BUN. Extra pieces of bun (and even whole buns!) littered our trays by the end the meal. Standard Toppings: 7.0 Toppings consisted of shredded cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a BBQ-like secret sauce. Generally our crew isn't a fan of shredded cheese on our burgs. It just seems...wrong. And if you MUST use it, at least melt it. Lettuce and tomato seemed fresh and added a bit of a gourmet touch. We had mixed feelings on the sauce. Some thought it added a nice kick, but most of us were kinda #overit by the last bite. Sides: 9.7 These fries were DELISH. Picture the flavor and crisp of an Arby's curly fry + the shape and seasoning of a Rally's fry. We all agreed these were some of the best fries we'd had in a while. And if you're really feeling indulgent, go with the bacon/cheese/ranch fries and pencil in a 10 mile run to burn them off. Taste: 6.7 As mentioned in the intro, this burger was enjoyable, but not memorable. We like a burger that strives to be a little different, but the weak bun killed it for a few of us. It's not ALL about the meat, people! Accuracy: 10.0 Nothing to complain about here. Value: 6.3 A few of us ordered drinks, which brought up the price of the meal more than we liked (FQ prices...wah, wah). Call us crazy, but we always feel a little gipped when a burger joint doesn't include fries. If you really think the fries are worth a few extra bucks (which these actually might be), at least offer them at a discounted price with a burger order. Because let's be honest, who in the heck eats a burger WITHOUT fries (or for all you serial killers out there, chips)?! Service: 9.8 Angie made us feel pretty special. While the restaurant definitely wasn't busy when we were there, she certainly rolled out the red carpet for our crew. She made sure our waters were always full, and checked in with us just enough without being annoying. People like her make a dining-out experience THAT much better. Returnability: 6.2 Most of us felt we wouldn't go out of our way to get this burger, but with limited high quality choices in the Quarter, this place SHOULD see solid business. However, the location is a bit hard to find, they don't have any signage on the street, and most tourists in the area are so drunk that they probably don't mind the overpriced junk that fills both sides of Bourbon Street. But if you find yourself in the Quarter and have a hankering for a decent burger and delicious fries, definitely stop by -- and tell Angie that Burger Meet NOLA sent you!
