![]() Restaurant Name: High Hat Café Neighborhood: Freret St. Ambiance: Classy 50's Diner Name of the Burger Ordered: High Hat Burger Price of the Burger(s): $12.50 Size of the Burger: 8 oz Temperature: Cooked to order High Hat met our HIGH expectations (get it?!). It may not be the first place you think of when you think, "I want a killer burger," but this is DEFINITELY a worthy competitor to Company Burger for Freret Corridor burger supremacy.
High Hat Burger: 7.87 Bun: 7.0 The bun was solid, but if there was one aspect of the burger that did NOT shine, this was it. It held together well and had good taste, but was a bit greasy and got a tad soggy (bad combo!). Patty: 8.0 Juicy, fresh, and flavorful...it's a good sign when the adjectives you're using to describe your patty could also be used to describe Beyoncé (we've got some B lovers on our squad). However, most felt their burgers were just a touch overcooked compared to how they ordered it, which was the only thing keeping the patty from scoring higher. If we've learned anything on our burger journey, it's to order your burger one temperature lower than usual (i.e. med-rare instead of medium)! Especially when you're slamming a kitchen with 6-8 of the same exact order all at once. We've typically seen that at least a couple of the burgers come out overcooked (and those raters get REAL sad!). Bun to Meat Ratio: 7.0 Good ratio, but the patty had a "hand-formed" look (i.e. squat and stubby instead of thin and disc-like), which left most people with extra bun around the periphery. We love the hand-packed look, but add enough meat to satisfy the bun (and us!). Standard Toppings: 8.3 PIMENTO CHEESE, who knew!? Not a cheese you typically see offered on a burger, but it was FANTASTIC. Additionally, the lettuce and tomato were bursting with color and freshness (Finally! For the most part we've had some sorry looking L&T...). And finally, THE PICKLES. They truly deserve their own shout out. Dill + sweet + spicy all combined into one amazing little flavorful, sodium-filled bite. As one rater said (who I believe was actually stealing other raters' pickles while they weren't looking) "The pickles were the best I've ever had!" Seriously, High Hat needs to bottle these babies up and sell them at every grocery store on EARTH. Or give us the recipe so we can. Sides: 7.5 A good fry with little to differentiate it is going to score between a 7-8. It's like a gymnastics or figure skating routine...it's easy to nail the basics, but you need to increase the degree of difficulty to earn that 10! High Hat DOES allow you to swap out the fries for another side, and they have lots of other interesting options. I'm looking you, pimento cheese grits. Taste: 8.3 If it's not clear from the other categories (or you just skipped straight to this one), this burger is damn good. Everyone rated taste an 8 or a 9. Accuracy: 8.8 A couple of overcooked burgers warranted a few points being docked from the overall accuracy score. Value: 7.8 $12.50 ain't exactly a deal, but it's a good burger and it comes with a side. We've certainly had more expensive burgers that were far less tasty. Service: 8.0 Nothing stood out good or bad. We did feel like PERHAPS the waitress was rushing us out a little quickly at the end, but we WERE taking up one of their only large tables on a fairly busy evening. Returnability: 8.0 More people might think of Company Burger when in the area, but this is a totally different type of burger and both deserve their own space on the block. You really can't go wrong with either one, but High Hat's burger is definitely worthy of a spot in your burger rotation! Want to see how High Hat ranks? Check out our overall Burger Meet rankings.
