Restaurant Name: The Avenue Pub* Neighborhood: Lower Garden District Ambiance: Classic New Orleans Pub Name of the Burger Ordered: Pub Burger Price of the Burger(s): $13 Size of the Burger: 7 oz Temperature: Cooked to Order *open 24 hours! We always try to bring guests to Burger Meet, but for this week's Meet we welcomed two very special guests. The parents of one of our raters were in town to help with a move, and were dying to check out what we've been up to with this "Burger Club thing". While we thought they ultimately may conclude that we were all a little nuts for analyzing meat and bread so intensely, they actually ended up having a blast and we loved having them join the fun. All that said, Avenue Pub wasn't the best burger we've had, but the atmosphere and beer selection made for a great after-work stop, and an enjoyable place to sit and grab some food and drinks with friends. Another plus: it's open 24 hours. So anytime the craving strikes, you've got at least one decent option in the LGD. And don't be embarrassed to grab a burg and a drink at all hours, there's always a healthy-sized group of residents and doctors hanging out after their shifts, ready to keep you company.
Additionally, while we only rated the standard Pub Burger, we actually did try one of Avenue Pub's limited-time offerings as part of its "Blended Burger Project" (#realtalk: the beer convinced us we were still hungry). This is a movement that strives to make burgers better by blending ground meat with chopped mushrooms. It's supposed to be a healthier patty + be more sustainable for the planet. We not sure if we believe that or not, but the special burger WAS pretty tasty. Scroll down to the photos for a full description, but note that the burger may not be available anymore. Pub Burger: 7.00 Bun: 7.5 Soft, with a light toasting on its underside. One rater even declared the bun, "the best part of the burger package!" Patty: 7.0 The patty appeared juicier on the plate than it actually was in our mouths. Especially since we all ordered medium-rare burgs. Meat tasted good, but was nothing extraordinary. Bun to Meat Ratio: 5.5 One rater summed it up nicely when he said, "I have never seen such a periphery..." There was just TOO. MUCH. BUN. Standard Toppings: 6.5 Feelings on the toppings were a bit of a mixed bag. The Pub Burger came with your standard lettuce and tomato, and offered several options for cheese (no upcharge, nice!). But NO American cheese! I'm sorry, but cheddar ain't betta when it comes to burgers. The cheese definitely got lost in the rest of the package, and their special pub sauce (garlic aioli-esque) didn't pack much flavor either. Sides: 7.5 These were some of the best fries we've had in a while, but Avenue Pub definitely skimped on the portion. Our bodies thanked them later, but in the moment we were begging for more. As we often do, we also ordered a couple of other appetizers/sides, but didn't rate them. The veggie quesadilla and the hummus plate were delicious and we highly recommend them both. Very quality offerings for a pub/dive bar. Taste: 7.3 Overall, the group felt a little "blah" about the flavor combo. While it wasn't a BAD burger, there wasn't anything that truly made it stand out. Accuracy: 8.0 While we typically see one or two raters get a slightly overcooked patty, Avenue Pub was an even more egregious offender. Half of our table had perfectly cooked medium-rare burgers, and other half ended up with medium/medium-well. That's a bit too big of a miss in our book. Value: 6.3 We felt that for $15 (burger + tax) you can definitely get a better burger in NOLA. 'Nuff said. Service: 8.0 Everyone was friendly, especially the poor bartender who one of the parentals engaged in a lengthy conversation. The two of us that went up to order food did find the guy behind the food counter a bit odd, but harmless. Overall the place had a good vibe to it. Returnability: 6.0 Most of us felt the burger was just "OK". Now if you're looking for BEER selection then you've definitely come to the right place. Tons (and I mean tons) of beers on tap. Everything you've ever heard of, and some that you haven't. If we shown a little less self-control the burger may have ended up with an even slightly higher score! In the end we all felt that returnability based on the burger was probably slim, but if we came back for drinks and a game, we wouldn't shy away from ordering one up. Plus, it's open 24 hours, so if you're looking to satisfy a craving and fast food isn't your thing, Avenue Pub has you covered. Want to see how The Avenue Pub ranks?
